Special Shortcuts

Always Run As Administrator

Sometimes you need to run a program with administrator priviledges. You can right-click and choose 'Run-As…' or you can create a custom shortcut.

  1. Right-click the shortcut icon for the desired program and choose “Properties”
  2. Find the 'Compatibility' tab, check the box at the bottom labeled 'Run this program as an administrator'
  3. If desired click the button labeled 'Change settings for All Users' below the check box and check the same box on that form.
  4. Click 'OK' all the way out.

Always Open Website with Chosen Browser

Sometimes you need to open a specific website with a certain browser to comply with compatibility or functionality features of that website. You can first open the desired browser and then navigate to the website. Or you can create a shortcut specific to that browser and website combination.

  1. Start by creating a new shortcut to your desired browser. DO NOT copy an existing shortcut for that browser. Some shortcuts have custom un-changeable properties that will interfere with additional customization.
    • Here are the common locations for InternetExplorer, Chrome, and Firefox on Windows 7
    1. C:\Program Files (x86)\Internet Explorer\iexplore.exe
    2. C:\Program Files (x86)\Google\Chrome\Application\chrome.exe
    3. C:\Program Files (x86)\Mozilla Firefox\firefox.exe
    • Create a shortcut by right-clicking and choosing 'Create Shortcut', OR by right-click-dragging the exe file on to your desktop (or desired folder) and choosing 'Create Shortcut Here' from the context menu.
  2. To make this new shortcut go directly to the desired website, begin by right-clicking the new shortcut and choosing 'Properties' from the context menu.

  3. In the properties dialog find the 'Target' box. Do not erase what is there but go to the end of the line, add a space, then add the URL or web address of the desired website. Click 'Apply' and 'OK'.

  4. Right-click the shortcut and choose 'Rename', give the shortcut an appropriate name. Press enter to complete.
