Windows FTP Client

Typically when you connect to an FTP you would use a dedicated client program (such as CuteFTP, Fetch, Filezilla, or FireFTP.) If you do not have a dedicated FTP client installed Windows Explorer can be used to connect to an FTP site to down load and upload files.

  1. Open Windows Explorer Windows Explorer. Remember! this is NOT Internet Explorer
NOTE: You can use either Windows Explorer or Internet Explorer. However Internet Explorer will only allow downloading and NOT uploading of files. Because FTP involves working with files, Windows Explorer may make the most sense.
  2. Click to select the Address bar.

The Address bar is highlighted in yellow.
  3. Type the FTP site’s address.
For example; Documation's FTP address is: ftp://ftp.documation.com
NOTE: that the ftp:// portion of the address must be included!
  4. Press Enter.

You will be prompted for a username and password, the password is case sensitive. Enter the appropriate credentials and click 'Log On'.
