Block or Allow Pop-ups

Google Chrome

Google Chrome prevents pop-ups from automatically appearing and cluttering your screen. Whenever the browser blocks pop-ups for a site, the blocked pop-up alert icon appears in the address bar. Click the icon to see the pop-ups that have been blocked or to manage pop-up settings for the site.


Allow all pop-ups

You can allow all pop-ups by disabling the pop-up blocker. Follow these steps:

  1. Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Click Show advanced settings.
  4. in the “Privacy” section, click the Content settings button.
  5. In the “Pop-ups” section, select “Allow all sites to show pop-ups.” Customize permissions for specific websites by clicking Manage exceptions.

See pop-ups for a specific site

To see blocked pop-ups for a site, follow the steps listed below:

  1. If pop-ups have been blocked, you'll see the blocked pop-up alert icon in the address bar. Click the icon to see a list of the blocked pop-ups.
  2. Click the link for the pop-up window that you'd like to see.
  3. To always see pop-ups for the site, select “Always show pop-ups from [site].” The site will be added to the exceptions list, which you can manage in the Content Settings dialog.

To manually allow pop-ups from a site, follow the steps below:

  1. Click the Chrome menu Chrome menu on the browser toolbar.
  2. Select Settings.
  3. Click Show advanced settings.
  4. in the “Privacy” section, click the Content settings button.
  5. In the “Pop-ups” section, click Manage exceptions.
    • You may choose to allow only a specific page by using a specific URL: http://www/documation.com/page1.html
    • Or you may use wild-cards (*):
      • [*].documation.com - will allow ANY and all pages at documation.com
      • www.documation.com - will allow any pages on www.documation.com but not from web.documation.com


Internet Explorer

There are several versions of Internet Explorer in use. These instructions were written for Internet Explorer 11 but versions 10, 9, and 8 should be very similar. When internet Explorer blocks a pop-up window you may see a yellow ribbon or message at the top OR bottom of the window. (See examples:)

Several steps in this set direct you to open “Internet Options.” “Internet Options” can be opened several ways:

  1. as described in the steps below
  2. from the “Tools” menu in Internet Explorer
  3. from the Control Panel > Internet Options icon

To turn Pop-up Blocker on or off

  1. Open the desktop, and then tap or click the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar.
  2. Tap or click the Tools button Tools, and then tap or click Internet options.
  3. On the Privacy tab, under Pop-up Blocker, select or clear the Turn on Pop-up Blocker check box, and then tap or click OK.

Block all pop-ups

Even if you turn pop-up blocker on, Internet Explorer won't block pop-ups from sites that are in the Local intranet or Trusted sites security zones. If you want to block all pop-ups—including pop-ups on Local intranet or Trusted sites—you'll have to change the blocking level.

  1. Open the desktop, and then tap or click the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar.
  2. Tap or click the Tools button Tools, and then tap or click Internet options.
  3. On the Privacy tab, under Pop-up Blocker, tap or click Settings.
  4. In the Pop-up Blocker settings dialog box, under Blocking level, set the blocking level to High: Block all pop-ups (Ctrl+Alt to override).
  5. Tap or click Close, and then tap or click OK.

Turn off notifications when pop-ups are blocked

You can turn off notifications if you don't want Internet Explorer to let you know every time it blocks a pop-up.

  1. Open the desktop, and then tap or click the Internet Explorer icon on the taskbar.
  2. Tap or click the Tools button Tools, and then tap or click Internet options.
  3. On the Privacy tab, under Pop-up Blocker, tap or click Settings.
  4. In the Pop-up Blocker settings dialog box, clear the Show Notification bar when a pop-up is blocked check box.
  5. Tap or click Close, and then tap or click OK.
